Scoliosis Braces

One of the most popular and widely accepted treatment options for scoliosis is bracing, particularly to kids and adolescents. Braces are customized to fit the various needs of the patients, primarily tapped to support the spinal curve and prevent it from further damage during the patient’s maturing years.

Usually, bracing is given to patients who have curves from 25 to 40 degrees, as well as those who have a progress of 5 degrees and worse every four months. Those who have yet to attain complete skeletal growth are more likely to benefit from scoliosis braces.

Braces are made to fit each individual curve. This task if performed by a professional called and orthotist, and is usually recommended by orthopedic specialist. While each brace can be customized, the patient will be provided with specific instructions on its proper use. Through periodic examinations and X-rays, specialists can evaluate the effectiveness of braces on the patient. Likewise, regular exercise is suggested for individuals to keep their bodies fit, as well as able to maintain adequate muscle and spinal strength.

There are however side effects on the use of scoliosis braces. Skin problems and rashes usually occur to patients who have braces, this is why it is imperative for them to mention it to orthotist. Lotions and creams should also not be applied since these items cause the skin to soften making it more in danger of having marks as a consequence of bracing.

There are common Scoliosis Braces used like Charleston Bending Brace, Milwaukee Brace, and Boston Brace.

The Milwaukee Brace has a neck ring which can be worn except during physical activities like swimming. The Boston Brace is akin to the Milwaukee Brace, except for the neck ring part. Meanwhile, Charleston Bending Brace type, unlike the Milwaukee and Boston braces, is worn only while the patient is sleeping
